Pavel Berman was born in Moscow in 1970. He studied in the Central School of Music and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Igor Bezrodniy and then went to the Juilliard School in New York to study with Dorothy DeLay and later with Isaac Stern. Mr. Berman attracted international attention when he won the Second Prize int the 1987 Paganini Competition at the age of 17 and received First Prize and the Gold Medal at the 1990 Indianapolis International Violin Competition. He has performed as a soloist and/or conductor with orchestras such as the Moscow Virtuosi, Orchestra RAI di Torino, Orchestra di Santa Cecilia, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Berliner Symphoniker, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Philharmonic Orchestra and others. He has performed in prestigious halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Herkulessaal in Munich, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, Bunkakaikan in Tokyo, Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In 1998, Mr. Berman founded the Kaunas Chamber Orchestra in Lithuania and was its artistic director until 2005. Pavel Berman has collaborated with musicians such as Lazar Berman, András Schiff, Bruno Canino, Alexander Rudin, Eliahu Inbal, Daniel Oren, Shlomo Mintz, Alban Gerhardt, Donald Weilerstein. Additionally, he has recorded for Koch International, Audiofon, Discover, Phoenix Classics, Dynamic. He currently gives masterclasses in numerous academies and is regularly invited to participate in the juries of the Paganini International Competition, the George Enescu International Competition, the Isang Yun Competition, Classical Strings and many others. In 2021, Mr. Berman became the co-founder and artistic director for the Monteverdi Circle Online Centre for the Performing Arts. Pavel Berman is currently a professor in Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland, and in Accademia Perosi in Biella, Italy. Among his former students are such artists as the recent winner of Paganini competition Giuseppe Gibboni, the concertmaster of La Scala orchestra Laura Marzadori, the winner of ICMA 2022 prize Gennaro Cardaropoli and many other violinists who have taken leading positions in orchestras. He plays an Antonio Stradivari violin, Cremona 1702 ‘ex David Oistrakh’, kindly lent to him by the Fondazione Pro Canale in Milan.

VIOLIN MASTER CLASS WITH PAVEL BERMAN

The course will be dedicated to the various components of the violin technique and to the interpretation of pieces from any era. With particular attention to the distribution of the bow and the development of agility in the left hand.
 
Attention: For those who are interested in attending both Pavel Berman’s course (14–20 August) and the course with Pavel Berman and Eva Bindere (2–7 September), it is possible to submit applications for both. However, applicants will be asked to indicate their preference between the two courses in case places are no longer available.

Admission to the course will take place after selection. To participate, candidates must submit their application to the Festival Secretariat at infolivornomusicfestival@gmail.com by 31 May 2026, with no payment required at this stage, attaching the following documents:
1) A short single-take video, with good audio quality, containing the performance of an aria of your choice, provided via YouTube link, Google Drive, or Dropbox.
2) The following form for the application and the processing of personal data, completed and signed.

The results of the selection will be communicated via email by June 5, 2026.
 
No later than June 10, 2026, admitted candidates must confirm their participation by filling the online registration form (click to go to the form) complete with the payment of the registration and attendance fees.

The timetable of the course will be defined by the professor according to the composition of the class.
The course provides a piano accompanist (only on request at the time of registration).

The organization reserves the right to make some scholarships available to the most deserving students, to be assigned at the end of the course and at the discretion of the teachers.
